Why?

It entertains whilst
extolling human values in the process.

It preserves the relationship between children
and the art of theatre.

It increases the students interest in learning the language as he or she discovers\
that Enlgish is also useful outside the classroom.

It challenges the student to understand English spoken by someone other than his or her teacher, thus improving the students listening comprehension.

In the days prior to and following the event the students are highly motivated due to the expectation of watching the play.
Teachers can use the written and audio resources provided to take advantage of this motivation.

Working with songs from the play is an excellent opportunity
to learn new vocabulary while having fun.

AN IMAGINARY WORLD KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR

A group of actors arrive in a school. It is a cold winter’s morning. The school doors are opened and a classroom is transformed into a costume room. The van, containing bags with props, costumes, a portable set, lights and sound equipment is backed into the school playground and unloaded. Within an hour the company is ready to begin the performance.

Last night at a theatre. Today in a school hall. In the afternoon in a huge gymnasium. Tomorrow morning in a small paved area outside the main building. And the audience?

Serkan, a 15 year old boy. It is break-time, he is playing football with his friends. Suddenly they start quarrelling and discussing the match. Serkan, sneaks away, brings some rubber sticks and suggests a sword fight. They all laugh and run around the playground. In his mind, he has become D’Artagnan, training his soldiers…

Guadalupe, an 8 year old girl. She is having dinner with her family. After answering some questions about the result of her dictation today, her mind shuts down and slowly starts day-dreaming about the following morning, when a theatre company will come to visit her own school. She already knows the story, Cleopatra, told to her by her teacher; she is constantly humming the melody of her favorite song, taught in her music class… She is already in Egypt now.

John, a young man of 24. He studies at the University. He attends an english institute to take his lessons twice a week. This afternoon he receives an e-mail from the girl he likes… Automatically, he smiles remembering the story of Cyrano of Bergerac, the play he will be attending this evening with his english teacher, and dares to reply to her with a romantic poem.

At Artspot, an educational theatre company, we like to think these things happen. We intend to create a unique moment so that Serkan’s, Guadalupe’s & John’s expectations become true.

The mind lives in the imaginary world, with pictures, characters, sounds, colours, crazy stories which we create constantly. We enjoy being carried away by the emotion, we switch from happiness to fear, excitement to sadness.

Artspot offers the imagined and enacted world of human beings, which is one of the primary ways we learn about life - about actions and consequences, about customs and beliefs, about others and ourselves.

Since its creation in 1997, ArtSpot has been deeply involved in exploring alternatives and new sidelights to education through the art of theatre.

Our plays are created to make the learning of the English language more entertaining whilst extolling human values in the process.

Special care is taken to maintain an uncomplicated but insightful vocabulary, to develop clear and vivid musical concepts, and to expressly include the communicative aspect of body language.

The educational value of our plays is enhanced by a resource package that target different aspects of the English Language. These activities, together with the creative resourcefulness of the teachers, make this project a powerful educational tool.
